Its name comes from Sonnenkoepflé, 'sun summit'

The name is a corruption of Sonnenkoepflé, the 'sun summit', for a hill strongly exposed to the sun. The grand cru covers the south face of the hill between 230 and 430 m, above Westhalten and Soultzmatt, on varied Triassic soils. In the Middle Ages the slope was part of the Obermundat, a possession of the bishop of Strasbourg.
