According to the Alsace wine council, the Furstentum is mentioned in 1330 in an inventory of vines owned by a Basel convent. The vines face south and south-west between 300 and 400 m above Kientzheim and Sigolsheim, on stony brown calcareous soils of the Lower Dogger. It joined the grands crus in 1992.
