The earliest known mention of the Brand is in a 13th-century manuscript kept in the Colmar municipal library. Its slopes curve from south-east to due south between 250 and 380 m above Turckheim, sheltered from north winds by a ring of hills. The soil is acid, sandy granite, with a layer of granite sand five to eight metres thick in the middle of the cru.
