The Altenberg is cited as early as 1050 in archives relating to Pope Leo IX, and belonged to religious houses and the bishopric of Strasbourg until it was sold as national property in 1789. It lies between Traenheim and Bergbieten on clay-dominated marl. It was one of the 24 lieux-dits added to the grands crus in 1983.
