The Stein rises above the Main on the edge of Würzburg and has been planted with vines since at least 779. At 85 hectares it is one of the largest single vineyards in Germany, and its wine gave its name to Franconian Steinwein. Records show Silvaner was planted here in 1665, one of the earliest plantings of the grape in Germany.
