In the Middle Ages the Altenberg de Bergheim belonged to the Cistercians, then to the Ribeaupierre family. It faces due south on the Grasberg hill between 220 and 320 m, on red, very stony marl-limestone soils rich in fossils. Since 2005 it may produce blends of several grape varieties, an exception among Alsace grands crus.
