In 613 the future king Dagobert gave vines on the Steinklotz to the abbey of Haslach, one of the oldest records of Alsace viticulture. The slope rises from 200 to 300 m above Marlenheim, facing south-east, on marl covered with limestone scree. It joined the grands crus in 1992.
