The archives of the dukes of Württemberg already mention the Sporen in 1432, and in 1580 the writer Fischart ranked it first among Alsace wines. The vineyard lies just south of Riquewihr on gentle east-facing slopes between 265 and 310 m, on clay-marl Lower Jurassic soils. It joined the grands crus in 1992.
