In 1935 the Beblenheim wine syndicate won a court case against a grower who had sold wine from another lieu-dit as Sonnenglanz, and the ruling defined the name's boundaries. The gentle south-east slopes lie between 220 and 274 m, on clay-limestone soil over Oligocene conglomerates and marl. It was one of the 24 lieux-dits added to the grands crus in 1983.
