Its old name, Schönenberg, means 'beautiful hill'

The hill was once called Schönenberg, the 'beautiful hill', a name later turned into Schoenenburg and then Schoenenbourg. It rises on steep south-facing slopes between 270 and 380 m, between Riquewihr and Zellenberg, on dolomitic and gypsum-bearing Keuper marl covered with thin layers of sandstone and Muschelkalk gravel. It joined the grands crus in 1992.
