When the Alsace Grand Cru appellation was created in 1975, the Schlossberg was its only named vineyard, and its growers had already agreed written harvest rules in 1928. The steep south and south-east slopes lie between 230 and 350 m on the Bixkoepfel hill above Kientzheim, on slightly acid granite sand over migmatitic granite.
