The Rangen is recorded in the Middle Ages, notably when the Dominicans of Basel bought vines there in 1291. It is the southernmost Alsace grand cru, a very steep due-south slope above the Thur at Thann, rising from 340 to 467 m, among the highest vines in Alsace. Its soils are volcanic, linked to the ancient Molkenrain volcano.
