The lieu-dit is attested in 823, and in the 9th century the Benedictine abbots of Ebersmunster owned vines there. The grand cru faces south-east between 250 and 350 m, between Kintzheim and Orschwiller, on stony acid brown soils formed from gneiss. It joined the grands crus in 1992.
