In 777 Charlemagne's envoys praised the wines of Beno Villare (Bennwihr), whose vines covered the Marckrain. The gentle east and south-east slopes lie between 200 and 300 m between Bennwihr and Sigolsheim, on an Oligocene coastal conglomerate of oolitic limestone pebbles with marl. It joined the grands crus in 1992.
