The name means 'hill of almond trees', and almond trees still grow on the hill, which Mittelwihr is known for. The vines lie east of Mittelwihr and south of Beblenheim, on gentle south-facing slopes between 210 and 250 m, on brown calcareous soils from an Oligocene conglomerate next to the Rhine fault. It joined the grands crus in 1992.
