The Kitterlé forms an arc of steep slopes on the Unterlinger massif above Guebwiller, between 270 and 360 m, facing south-west to east. More than 50 km of walls were built to hold up its terraces, and the vines grow mainly on Triassic sandstone. In 1877 Charles Gérard called it the treacherous Kitterlé, nicknamed 'calf-breaker'.
