A 9th-century donation by Murbach abbey first mentions the Hengst. The slopes face south-east between 270 and 360 m, between Wintzenheim and Wettolsheim, on very stony calcareous, sandy and clay soils over Oligocene conglomerates. Since 2022 red wine from Pinot Noir may also carry the grand cru name.
