Formerly known as Brane-Mouton, the estate was renamed by Nathaniel de Rothschild after he bought it in 1853. It was classed as a second growth in 1855 and raised to first growth in 1973 after decades of lobbying by Baron Philippe de Rothschild. In the 1920s it began bottling its whole harvest at the château instead of shipping it to merchants.
