The estate takes its name from a fortified tower built near the Gironde during the Hundred Years' War and destroyed after 1453. It stands at the southern tip of Pauillac on the border with Saint-Julien, a few hundred metres from the estuary. Its second wine, Les Forts de Latour, has been made since 1966.
