Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel founded the estate in 1811 and in 1830 crowned his cellars with oriental pagodas, a nod to his wine's exports to India. Debts forced him to sell in 1852. In 1855 it was ranked as a second growth and the top wine of Saint-Estèphe.
