The lords of Cantemerle appear in a manuscript of 1147, and wine production is recorded from 1354. Cantemerle was left off the first published version of the 1855 classification and added in September 1855 after lobbying by its owner Caroline de Villeneuve-Durfort. The estate is in Macau, near the southern end of the Médoc.
