The Steinberg was planted by the Cistercian monks of Kloster Eberbach, an abbey founded in 1136 by monks sent from Clairvaux. The monks later enclosed the vineyard with a stone wall, which still surrounds it. It belongs to the Hessian State Wine Estates, which also run the abbey.
