Schloss Johannisberg began as a Benedictine monastery and was rebuilt as a Baroque palace and winery by the Prince-Abbots of Fulda in the early 18th century. Emperor Francis I gave it to Prince Metternich after the Congress of Vienna, and his family ran it for over 150 years. Its 50 hectare vineyard is famous for Spätlese, which estate tradition says was discovered here in 1775 when the courier bringing permission to harvest arrived late.
