The Schlossberg is part of the Rüdesheimer Berg, a very steep south-facing slope running west from Rüdesheim past the ruined Ehrenfels Castle to where the Rhine turns north. Its soils are Taunus quartzite and slate, and the Berg is planted almost entirely with Riesling. Until the 1970s it was a maze of tiny plots held up by dry-stone walls.
