Tradition says the name comes from the quarter of the harvest of these best plots of Chaume that was owed to the local lord. It became an AOC in 1954, and in 2011 it was the first appellation in the Loire to be granted the Grand Cru mention. It makes sweet wine from Chenin Blanc affected by noble rot.
