Bourgueil makes mostly red wine from Cabernet Franc in the commune of Bourgueil and its neighbours, on the north bank of the Loire facing Chinon. Cabernet Franc is traditionally called Breton here, and local tradition credits the monks of Bourgueil Abbey with spreading it. The AOC was created on 31 July 1937.
