Savennières makes mostly dry Chenin Blanc on schist hills on the north bank of the Loire, west of Angers. Inside it lie two smaller appellations, Savennières-Roche-aux-Moines and Savennières-Coulée-de-Serrant, the latter a monopole of the Joly family. The AOC was defined in 1952.
