Hermitage is a single south-facing hill above the town of Tain-l'Hermitage, topped by the Saint-Christophe chapel. Legend says the knight Gaspard de Stérimberg retired here as a hermit after returning from a crusade in 1224. The reds are made from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Roussanne.
