The name means "the Pope's new castle" and recalls the Avignon popes of the 14th century, who built a residence in the village. Its vineyards, known for their large rounded stones, cover about 3,200 hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Bédarrides, Courthézon and Sorgues. The rules drawn up here by Baron Le Roy in the 1920s helped shape the French AOC system, and the AOC was created in 1936.
