Cariñena lies on a plateau about 50 km south-west of Zaragoza, with vineyards rising from 400 to 800 m towards the Sierra de la Virgen. Its DO was created in 1932, one of the oldest in Spain. Ampelographers believe the Carignan grape most likely originated here.
