Aÿ was one of the most renowned wine villages in the early history of Champagne, and King Henri IV styled himself "Sire d'Aÿ". Its south-facing slopes above the Marne are about 89% Pinot Noir. In 2016 it merged with neighbouring villages to form the commune of Aÿ-Champagne.
