The Ahr is one of Germany's smallest wine regions, with about 558 hectares in the steep valley of a tributary of the Rhine. Despite its northern position, red varieties cover 86 percent of its vineyards, mostly Pinot Noir. The 2021 floods destroyed about a tenth of the vineyards and many cellars along the river.
