The Kaiserstuhl is a small range of volcanic hills, up to 557 metres high, rising from the Upper Rhine Plain northwest of Freiburg. Its name is thought to come from a court day held there in 994 by Otto III, who later became emperor. It is one of the warmest wine areas in Germany and is known for Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris grown on volcanic rock and loess.
