Which countries produce the most wine?

Italy was the world's largest wine producer in 2025 with 44.4 million hectolitres, ahead of France (36.1) and Spain (28.7), according to the OIV. World production was about 227 million hectolitres, close to the historic low of 2024. Spain has the largest vineyard area.

World wine production in 2025

According to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), whose State of the World Wine Sector report was published in May 2026, world wine production in 2025 is estimated at 227 million hectolitres, excluding juices and musts. That is only 0.6% more than 2024, a historically low year, and 9.4% below the five-year average: the third low harvest in a row. Frost, excessive rain, drought and heatwaves hit many regions, and some producers deliberately cut yields because of weak demand and high stocks. The European Union produced about 136 million hectolitres, around 60% of the world total. Italy remained the top producer with 44.4 million hectolitres, followed by France, whose 36.1 million was 16% below its five-year average, and Spain at 28.7 million after a third year of drought.

Producers outside Europe

The United States ranked fourth with an estimated 20.0 million hectolitres in 2025, 16.2% below its five-year average, as softer demand led to more cautious production, particularly in California. The Southern Hemisphere produced around 49 million hectolitres, about 22% of world output. Australia led it with 11.3 million, ahead of Argentina at 10.8 million and South Africa at 10.2 million, a full recovery after two small vintages. Chile fell to 8.4 million, its lowest since 2007, while New Zealand made 3.7 million, its second-largest harvest on record. China, which ranked fifth in the world at its 2012 peak, produced only 2.2 million hectolitres and now ranks 18th. Georgia reached 2.6 million, its biggest volume in 30 years.

The largest vineyard areas

The world's vineyards covered about 7.0 million hectares in 2025, down 0.8% and shrinking for the sixth year in a row. These figures include vines grown for table grapes and raisins, which explains why China and Türkiye rank high despite modest wine output. Spain has the largest vineyard of any country, 919,000 hectares, much of it in Castilla-La Mancha. France lost about 34,000 hectares to uprooting in 2025, falling to 740,000. The EU as a whole accounted for 3.2 million hectares, 45% of the world total.

Where wine is consumed

World wine consumption in 2025 is estimated at 208 million hectolitres, down 2.7% on 2024 and the lowest level since 1957, according to the OIV. Nine of the ten largest markets drank less. The United States remains the biggest market at 31.9 million hectolitres, followed by France at 22.0 million and Italy at 20.2 million. Portugal bucked the trend with a record 5.6 million hectolitres. The OIV measures apparent consumption (production plus imports minus exports, adjusted for stocks), so country figures should be read with care. World exports fell 4.7% to 94.8 million hectolitres, worth 33.8 billion euros, meaning nearly one bottle in two is drunk outside the country where it was made.

Yes, in recent years. 2023, 2024 and 2025 were all low harvests, and the 2025 total of 227 million hectolitres was 9.4% below the five-year average because of extreme weather and deliberate cuts in response to weaker demand.
