Carthusian monks of Scala Dei tended Priorat's vineyards for centuries until 1835. A small group of winemakers led by René Barbier and Álvaro Palacios revived the region from 1989, sharing a winery in Gratallops for their first vintages. Catalonia made it a DOQ in 2000 and Spain confirmed it as a DOCa in 2009, the second after Rioja.
