Pettenthal lies on the Roter Hang, a 5 kilometre band of steep riverside vineyards between Nackenheim and Nierstein. Here red Permian sandstone and claystone rich in iron come to the surface, giving the slope its colour and name. These steep sites produce some of the richest Rieslings in Germany.
