Ticino, on the south side of the Alps, is the warmest wine region in Switzerland and has made wine since Roman times. Merlot was introduced in the early 20th century, after phylloxera, and is now the region's signature grape. It is also made into a white wine, Bianco di Merlot, by limiting skin contact.
