The Sonoma Coast AVA was approved in 1987 and covers about 480,000 acres, mostly along the Pacific coastline of Sonoma County. It is cooler and wetter than the rest of the county, which suits Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The smaller Fort Ross-Seaview and West Sonoma Coast AVAs were later carved out of it.
