The vineyard takes its name from the Abbey of Saint-Vivant, which in medieval times owned several of the Vosne-Romanée grands crus. It lies just below (east of) Romanée-Conti and became a grand cru AOC in 1936. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, its largest owner, leased its parcel from 1966 and bought it in 1988.
