A royal charter of 1756 under the Marquis of Pombal demarcated the Douro for Port, one of the oldest protected wine regions in the world. Cima Corgo, centred on Pinhão, is the largest subregion and holds most of the famous quintas. The wines were traditionally aged and shipped from the lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia, opposite Porto.
