Barca Velha was first made in 1952 by Fernando Nicolau de Almeida for Ferreira, using grapes from Quinta do Vale Meão in the Douro Superior. It helped pioneer the Douro as a region for dry red wine. Today its fruit comes mainly from Casa Ferreirinha's Quinta da Leda, near Almendra.
