The Douro valley's terraced vineyards were long devoted to Port, until Portugal joined the EEC in 1986 and the Gaia lodges lost their export monopoly. Since then many quintas bottle their own dry Douro reds and whites. The Alto Douro wine region was declared a World Heritage Site in 2001.
