Gavi, also called Cortese di Gavi, is a dry white made only from Cortese in eleven communes of the province of Alessandria, close to the Ligurian border. It became a DOC in 1974 and a DOCG in 1998, and wines from the commune of Gavi itself can be labelled Gavi del Comune di Gavi.
