Gattinara comes from hills on the west bank of the Sesia river in the province of Vercelli, where Nebbiolo is locally known as Spanna. It became a DOC in 1967 and a DOCG in 1990, and its vineyards grow on acidic porphyry soils left by an ancient supervolcano.
