Stellenbosch was founded in 1679 by Simon van der Stel and is the second-oldest European settlement in South Africa. In 1925 Abraham Perold at Stellenbosch University crossed Pinot Noir and Cinsaut to create Pinotage. It is the country's most famous wine district.
