Somló is an 832 hectare wine region on the slopes of an isolated extinct volcano in Veszprém county, crowned by the ruins of an 11th century castle. It makes only white wine, notably from the local Juhfark grape. Old Hungarian pharmacopoeias listed its wine as a medicine, and the Habsburg court is said to have favoured it.
