Rioja's vineyards follow the Ebro across La Rioja, Álava and part of Navarre, split into Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental. Its regulatory council was created in 1926, and in 1991 it became Spain's first denominación de origen calificada. Long ageing in oak is the traditional signature of its reservas and gran reservas.
