Cricova's cellars, 15 kilometres north of Chișinău, run through 120 kilometres of tunnels dug from the 15th century to quarry limestone. They were turned into an underground wine city in the 1950s, kept at about 12 °C all year. Legend says cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin entered them in 1966 and came out, with help, two days later.
