Cotnari is a village northwest of Iași, first recorded in 1448 and famous for the Grasă de Cotnari grape. Local tradition credits the vineyards to Moldavian prince Stephen the Great, under whom the village became an alternate royal residence. Stone buildings and roads were built there to serve the wine trade.
