Ribeiro lies in the north-west of Ourense province, in the valleys of the Avia, Miño and Arnoia. The Ordinances of Ribadavia of 1579 already codified its vineyards and wine trade, and in 1932 it became one of the first official DOs in Spain. It also makes a sweet wine from dried grapes, Viño Tostado.
